not quite

My lemon of a car got repossessed after all the money that I invested
Was dumped by a guy I knew was a jerk, lost a crap job of near 12 years of work

I've heard rejection is God's protection leading us down a new road
But discover whenever I'd change lanes, that's when the traffic slowed
And real life cookies aren't bigger looking like the size on the front of the box
And my brand new buzzer goes on the blink when opportunity knocks

When I do my best, I just can’t get it right
Had it all at my fingertips but now I'm at dumpster dive
I've fallen two steps back tryin to find my stride
I'm behind the line on the other side of not quite (not quite)

But like a flying insect, I try to exit through a window deceptively clear
Then end up as daddy-longlegs lunch cuz I can’t find the open door
It's a half glass of water and it don't matter what it held before I spilled it
It’s all empty and it won’t quench me lest I find a way to refill it

When I do my best, I just can’t get it right
Had it all at my fingertips but now I'm at dumpster dive
I've fallen two steps back tryin to find my stride
I'm behind the line on the other side of not quite

Maybe what I need is to be relieved instead of ripped off
Maybe what I need is to grieve instead of pissed off
By fallen two steps back tryin to find my stride
I'm behind the line on the other side of not quite (not quite)

I got my eye on shoppin' for a car that’s runnin’ gonna meet a sweeter guy
Going back to school to learn new tools, get a move on with my life
But I’m noticing my same routine, I've a pattern down this street
I can’t pretend, cuz once again another lather, rinse, repeat

Even when I do my best, I just can’t get it right
Had it all at my fingertips but now I'm at dumpster dive
I've fallen two steps back tryin to find my stride, yeah
I'm behind the line on the other side of not quite (not quite)
Even when I do my best it’s not quite
